The Boston Red Sox are back at it again. With still over two weeks until the trade deadline, The Red Sox have just completed their third trade of the month by acquiring All-Star pitcher Drew Pomeranz from the San Diego Padres. Earlier this month the Red Sox acquired Aaron Hill from the Milwaukee Brewers and Brad Ziegler from the Arizona Diamondbacks. Dennis Lin was the first to report the Pomeranz trade:

Pomeranz, who was acquired from the Athletics last season for Yonder Alonso and Marc Rzepczynski, is in the mist of a breakout season as he has posted an 8-7 record with a 2.47 ERA in 17 starts. He also has posted a very good 10.1 K/9 and 5.9 H/9 this season. The Red Sox have filled their biggest need with this trade as they can slot Pomeranz as the number two starter behind David Price.

Meanwhile, Evan Drellich was the first to report that the Padres would get RHP, Anderson Espinoza, in return for Pomeranz.

According to Keith Law of ESPIN, Espinoza is the 14th best prospect in all of baseball. In his recent top-50 mid-season prospect report, Law said of Espinoza: “The fact that Pedro Martinez comps aren’t laughable is a pretty good indicator of what Espinoza could be.” It has been reported that this is a straight one-for-one deal and no other players are involved. Say what you want, but it is pretty impressive that Padres GM, A.J. Peller, was able to turn Yonder Alonso and Marc Rzepczynski into the 14th-best prospect in baseball.
