It is February, which means that Spring Training is quickly approaching. Yet, there are still numerous remaining free agents out there that can contribute to big-league teams. In fact, there are still enough viable players out there to build an entire roster. The roster might not exactly compete for a playoff spot, but they could be better than a team like the Philadelphia Phillies. Most – if not all – of these players will find themselves on a roster come Opening Day. The list of remaining free agents is headlined by Ian Desmond, Yovani Gallardo, and Dexter Fowler.
Over the past few offseasons, more and more players have found themselves without a home when the calendar turns to February. This trend has occurred because players are getting a qualifying offer attached to their name, which means that any team that signs them must part ways with their first-round pick (unless they have a protected top-ten pick). While this usually does not hinder the top free agents from signing, it greatly effects the value of players such as Ian Desmond and Yovani Gallardo. This effect is made clear by the ability to build a fairly formidable roster with less than two weeks until pitchers and catchers report.
